Are you a qualified and passionate Veterinary Nurse looking for a unique opportunity to work with a diverse collection of zoo animals? We are seeking a dedicated Veterinary Nurse to support our Zoo Veterinary Surgeon in delivering exceptional veterinary care and welfare standards across our zoo collection.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the medical care, rehabilitation, welfare assessment, and treatment of a wide range of species while contributing to the continued development of our veterinary services.
About the Role
Working closely with our Zoo Veterinary Surgeon and animal care teams, you will provide clinical, technical, and administrative support across all aspects of veterinary practice. From assisting with diagnostics and anaesthesia to supporting animal welfare initiatives and training colleagues, this varied role offers a rewarding and challenging environment for an experienced veterinary professional.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the delivery of high-quality veterinary care to zoo animals.
- Administer medications, injections, and anaesthetics as required.
- Prepare and monitor animals during veterinary procedures.
- Assist with diagnostic testing, laboratory sample preparation, clinical pathology, and post-mortem examinations.
- Support inpatient care and rehabilitation programmes.
- Work collaboratively with animal care staff on animal capture, restraint, and transportation.
- Contribute to evidence-based husbandry and welfare assessment programmes.
- Assist in maintaining biosecurity protocols and safe working practices.
- Support regulatory inspections and veterinary compliance requirements.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and veterinary documentation.
- Manage veterinary stock levels, including pharmaceuticals and controlled drugs.
- Assist with the training and development of zoo keepers, veterinary students, veterinary nurse students, and volunteers.
- Promote the highest standards of animal welfare, health and safety, and professional practice.
What We’re Looking For
- Qualified Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN).
- Passion for animal welfare and conservation.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Confidence handling a variety of species and adapting to a dynamic zoo environment.
- Commitment to maintaining Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and professional standards.
- A proactive, flexible, and positive approach to work.
