Askham Bryan College is seeking a dependable and motivated individual to join our Farm Team as a Relief Weekend Feeder Wagon Operator. Based on our working farm just outside York, this role provides support across a diverse agricultural enterprise that includes a 200-cow dairy herd, beef cattle, sheep and arable operations.

Working every other weekend, with the potential for additional relief shifts during the week, the successful candidate will help ensure the smooth day-to-day running of livestock operations. The role requires a practical approach, a commitment to high standards of animal welfare, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a wider farm team.

This opportunity would suit someone with previous livestock or agricultural experience who is looking for flexible weekend work in a varied and rewarding farm environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate the feeder wagon and prepare/distribute feed rations to livestock in accordance with farm procedures.
  • Scrape out livestock housing and maintain clean, safe and hygienic farm environments.
  • Bed up livestock accommodation to ensure high standards of animal comfort and welfare.
  • Carry out general stockmanship duties, including monitoring livestock health, welfare and behaviour, reporting any concerns as appropriate.
  • Assist with the daily care and management of dairy, beef and sheep enterprises as required.
  • Operate farm machinery and equipment safely and in line with health and safety procedures.
  • Maintain a tidy working environment and support good farm housekeeping standards.
  • Work collaboratively with farm staff to ensure the efficient operation of weekend farm activities.
  • Undertake additional farm duties appropriate to the role and competency level when required.

Essential Requirements:

  • Experience of tractor operation and working with agricultural machinery.
  • Telehandler Certificate.
  • Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Reliable, punctual and committed to maintaining high standards of work and animal welfare.
  • Good understanding of health and safety practices within a farming environment.
  • Willingness to undertake a DBS check as part of the pre-employment process.

Start Date: As soon as possible. The College operates 2 starter/induction days per month to welcome and onboard new members. These are usually the first Monday and third Wednesday of each month (unless there is a bank holiday).
