Purpose of the role ZSL is seeking a full time animal steward to work on the small mammal section at London Zoo. The role will involve the day-to-day husbandry focusing on our Squirrel Monkeys and Ring Tailed Lemurs as well as being responsible for visitor engagement and safety in the walkthrough enclosure. Applicants would benefit from experience and passion for working within a zoo environment. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver high standards of animal welfare and husbandry, have an interest and skills for enclosure maintenance, be involved in training and enrichment programs and respect the importance of daily observations, communication and record keeping. Experience of dealing with the public is essential, together with the ability to work effectively within a team. Working hours vary throughout the year in line with zoo opening times and include regular weekend work, so flexibility is essential. Key responsibilities: Animal Feeding Diet Preparation: Assisting with the preparation of approved diets and carrying out the correct feeding procedures. Visitor Incident Support: Acting as the point of contact in the event of an incident involving a visitor and an animal, and advising on the appropriate course of action. Exhibit Maintenance Cleaning: Cleaning and maintaining exhibits and other designated areas. Animal Monitoring Reporting: Observing the behaviour, health, and security of animals and reporting any issues to the Team Leader or senior staff. Health Safety Compliance: Ensuring all safe systems of work and risk assessments are read, understood, signed, and consistently followed, including adherence to emergency procedures. About You Ability to demonstrate initiative and a pro-active approach to completing tasks Ability to clearly follow instructions on tasks requested to be carried out by the section manager. Purpose of the role An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Habitat Lead Keeper within the Predators and Primates Section at ZSL London Zoo. This is a hands-on role suited to an experienced keeper with demonstrable experience working with predators and or primates , alongside a strong practical aptitude for sp e cies-led habitat design, environmental management, and enclosure development. The position focuses on providing technical guidance, mentoring, and practical support to the keeper team in all a sp e cts of habitat design, construction, and maintenance. Alongside these re sp onsibilities, the successful candidate will continue to undertake full daily keeper husbandry duties , contributing directly to animal care, welfare monitoring, enrichment delivery, and routine operational requirements within the section. Rather than holding direct line-management re sp onsibility, the Habitat Lead Keeper provides guidance , supporting colleagues while ensuring habitats meet behavioural, welfare, and environmental requirements informed by current research. Working under the direction of the Section Manager, you will oversee the habitat design components of operational delivery, ensuring Environmental Management Plans remain current, evidence-based, and effectively implemented across the section. The role combines advanced husbandry knowledge, practical ability , and collaborative working to enhance animal welfare outcomes and support an immersive visitor experience. As our zoos are open seven days a week, your schedule will follow a rota, which includes weekends and bank holidays. We aim to balance business needs with personal flexibility, so you ll have advance notice of your shifts to help plan your time. Key Re sp onsibilities: Habitat Design Oversight: Support delivery of enclosure design priorities alongside the Section Manager and Habitat Design Officer. Technical Mentoring Keeper Support : Mentor and s upport colleagues in developing confidence and competence in habitat-related work. Environmental Management: Monitor and advise on E nvironmental Management Plans including temperature gradients, UV provision, substrates, and environmental complexity. Operational Support : Assume broader section management re sp onsibilities only in the absence of designated people managers when required . About You Significant practical experience working with predators and or primates within a zoological setting . Strong practical capability and genuine enthusiasm for sp e cies-focused habitat design and environmental management . Qualification in Zoo Animal Management or equivalent experience. Proven hands-on experience in habitat construction and refurbishment. Ability to interpret and apply research to environmental management and habit at design. U nderstanding of health and safety requirements in a zoological environment. Ability to organise and prioritise workload while supporting collaborative team delivery.
