Dog Trainer

This is a full-time role – 35 hours per week

Out of hours and weekend working will be required on occasion, as agreed by the Operations Manager.

Reports to Operations Manager

Job Purpose

  • Where possible to board dogs in training as required and assist with their training.
  • To assist with the dogs in training.
  • To assist with training for veterans and their dogs
  • To ensure excellent record keeping and the monitoring of records for dog welfare, training and assessments are up to date and implemented in accordance with BRAVEHOUND’s Database record keeping procedure.
  • To help with tasks to ensure the smooth operation of the BRAVEHOUND Programme.
  • To attend and help at events, promoting BRAVEHOUND.

Key Responsibilities

  • To utilise science and evidence-based training methods, using stress and force free training to obtain reliable behaviours on cues.
  • Maintain detailed records of each dog’s training via BRAVEHOUND’s database
  • Work with the Head of Training & Behaviour and the Lead Trainer to assist in the delivery of training for the BRAVEHOUNDs
  • Update training records and communicate with the veterans re homework and training sessions. In accordance with BRAVEHOUND’s database record keeping procedure.
  • Assist the Training Team to prepare content for the training platform for veterans and volunteers.
  • Where needed assist with 1:1 sessions and/or undertake home visits with another member of the training team
  • Assist with general tasks as required to aid the whole team, such as various administrative tasks, helping with veterinary appointments, dog related paperwork and transporting dogs.
  • To attend various events and opportunities to promote BRAVEHOUND
  • Take part in regular CPD, including mental health training, as required by the charity
  • Be responsible for self-development and keep up to date with the latest thinking on canine behaviour and training, attending internal training courses and meetings as requested by the management team.
  • Adhere at all times to the Charity’s Policies and Procedures
  • Promote the key messages, brand and positive public image of the work of BRAVEHOUND as required through the media, the public, local vets etc.

Resources

  • All employees are responsible for managing the resources issued.
  • Employees will be issued with a BRAVEHOUND branded hoodie and t-shirt and other clothing items to be worn at training and meetings.  Employees are expected to maintain these to a high standard of presentation and cleanliness
  • Access to the Charity vehicle as required.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (verbal and written).
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Reliable and flexible
  • Able to work on own initiative and have good judgement to escalate issues or seek guidance as appropriate
  • Passionate about enhancing the welfare of dogs
  • Thorough, in-depth knowledge of dog training and welfare.
  • Experience of safely handling dogs of a range of different breeds and behavioural characteristics
  • Experience in reading canine body language, facial expressions and vocalisations, and be able to understand how these relate to the dog’s emotional state
  • Understand the key indicators of compromised welfare in dogs and be able to recognise these,
  • A good understanding of the importance of great customer service, ideally with experience of providing excellent customer care.
  • Administrative skills, including use of MS Office
  • Commitment to the aims and objectives of BRAVEHOUND
  • Ability to travel to deliver training to veterans at venues in Central Scotland
  • Full, clean manual UK driving licence and confident driving a variety of vehicles
  • A reasonable level of fitness, stamina and mobility is required to complete the varied physical demands of the role
  • Emotional resilience to manage the potentially emotional demands of the role
  • Positive attitude to personal and professional development
